What the ratio is (and is not)
The gold:silver ratio is simply the gold price divided by the silver price. Traders watch it as a relative-value gauge; some stackers swap between metals when it reaches historical extremes. This site publishes the number and its history - it does not suggest trades on it.
For coin values, the ratio explains why a $10 gold eagle (about half a troy ounce of gold) is worth roughly 42 silver dollars' worth of metal despite the 10:1 face-value relationship.
