How melt value works

Melt value is the coin's metal content multiplied by the current spot price. Every coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint has a published weight and fineness, so the arithmetic is exact:

melt value = weight (g) × fineness ÷ 31.1035 × spot price ($/ozt)

The method, the price sources and what this site deliberately does not do are on the methodology page.

Melt value is the floor, not an appraisal. Coins with collector value trade above their metal content, and dealers buy below melt and sell above it to earn a margin. This site publishes the metal arithmetic only - never buy or sell quotes, and never price predictions.
